Dear Art Lover,

I’m happy that Spring is nearly here. To see the buds on the trees, and the yellow of the daffodil brings a sense of hope that the whole world will bloom again. May this new year of the horse bring us to a better place insides ourselves and around the globe.

In my artmaking, I have been exploring new techniques, including printing onto cotton fabric and luminescent papers. I continue to hone my digital printmaking skills and have invested in a new, medium format printer that will enable me to create larger art prints in my studio. I have updated my website with new work from the Feng Shui, Soulscapes and Kyoto series, along with the 911 Prayer Flag installation piece I created in reaction to September 11. I hope you'll have a look: http://www.zama.com.

***POETRY ***
This poem was written by Angela Keller of Camas WA and Dan Ruby of Vancouver WA after seeing Gesture IV and Gesture V at the SIGGRAPH N-Space art exhibit. Created using magnetic words on a cookie sheet, these two art lovers were moved by the work and choose to write a poem about it.

the elegant slenderness
     of lyrical rhythm
          entwines
               and reveals
an inner need to explore fantasy
for a brief moment in time

***MIDWEST COMPUTER ART EXHIBITION ***
I’m happy to have been invited to exhibit Gesture IV and Gesture V in the Midwest Computer Art Exhibition, held at the University of Saint Francis in Ft. Wayne, Indiana. If you happen to be in Ft. Wayne, I hope you’ll check it out. The show ends March 8th.

***SIGGRAPH INTERNATIONAL TRAVELING ART SHOW ***
This two year traveling exhibition from the n-space art gallery is currently at the Museum of Science and Industry in Tampa, Florida. In April the show travels to Venice, Italy. Gesture IV and Gesture V are represented in the exhibit. Here’s the current schedule.

March 2002: Museum of Science and Industry, Tampa Florida
April 2002: Venice Italy
May 2002: Fort Lauderdale, FL
June 2002: Taiwan
July 2002: Sydney, Australia
August 2002: Beijing, China
September/October: Bowling Green, Ohio
November: Minneapolis, Minnesota
January 2003: Rochester, NY
April 2003: Paris, France

***SECRETS AND INSIGHTS OF AWARD WINNING DIGITAL ARTISTS ***
And if that isn’t enough good news about the Gestures series…The insight and technique for creating the work will be showcased in a new book being written by digital evangelist Daryl Wise and digital artist Jeremy Sutton. This book will reveal the secrets of 50 contemporary digital artists. The book is being published by Hungry Minds and should be available early this summer.

***THE EYE'S MIND: ART THROUGH THE LENTICULAR LENS ***
Showcasing the cutting-edge lenticular works of several leading computer-based artists, this exhibit was first shown in conjunction with the Boston Cyberarts Festival in May 2001 at the Attleboro Museum and is now traveling to other venues. It is currently on exhibit at Texas Instruments in Attleboro, MA. If you know of other venues for this exhibit, I would love to hear from you.

***OPEN STUDIO IN APRIL ***
Mark your calendars for the weekend of April 27 and 28. I’ll be hosting my third open studio and showing a wide variety of limited editions and one-of-a-kind artwork. My studio in Sunnyvale, CA will be open Saturday and Sunday from 10-6. Email me if you need directions ([email protected]). I hope to see you!

***THE MAGNIFICENT 7 ***
With the upcoming release of Photoshop 7, Adobe Systems asked seven artists to create a unique piece of art for the products’ introduction. I am deeply honored that Adobe asked me to participate in this project. The new painting engine in Photoshop 7 is a wonderful addition that allows artists to paint almost as if they were using natural media. I choose to use these new tools for creating the work. Look for the articles to hit the Adobe web site any day now.

***MORE BOOKS ***
In addition to the Feng Shui book mentioned in the last newsletter, two new gift books featuring my art have been published by Arial Books/ Andrews McMeel. You can see some of the images on my website.

***INDIA ***
After September 11, I postponed my plans for traveling in India from January through March. I had planned on participating in an artist-in-residence opportunity this month in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. As you may know, there is terrible religious conflict and violence happening in this area these last few days. My thoughts and prayers are with all the Indian people of Gujarat. I look forward to rescheduling my studies in India for sometime in the future, as I have been looking forward to it for some time now.

***FRIENDS IN THE ARTS***
Friend and artist Nancy Barry-Jansson has brought together a group of artists who create work inspired by nature. Each artist donates 20% of profits from the sales of work featured on the web site to open space organizations. You’ll find them online at Artists for Open Space.
