Art Across Oceans
I arrived on the campus of the Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA) in Beijing at the beginning of August 2004 to collaborate with a handful of talented artists in the Digital Art Department. The collaboration was scheduled to coincide with the Guerilla Studio, an annual venue within the SIGGRAPH computer graphics conference, which was held that year in Los Angeles. CAFA is a top school for design and fine art in China. The Guerilla Studio (GS) is a state-of-the-art digital atelier that comes together for 5 days every summer during the larger SIGGRAPH event. GS Artist-in-Residence Helen Golden and Kathy Beal collaborated in real-time with myself and four artists at CAFA; Li Hong Wei, Gao Hua, Chen Den, and Wang Xi. The two locations, Los Angeles and Beijing, connected daily via the Internet using live audio and video to facilitate the shared art making experience. The collaboration investigated attitudes, values and behaviors in relationship to art and cultural identity. Working with the concept of BODY, we explored form and spirit in China and how it's identified with in the West.
